Bowled Over

A New Year awaits us like an empty bowl

waiting to be filled.

It is up to us to choose the ingredients,
be they bright and revelatory

or quietly contemplative.

Whatever your choices,
may they bring a little taste of magic into your life.

  1. Not too long ago I cooked with our small five year old son a soup for his mother and upon heating too much it 'boiled over', which lead to the demand to explain it to him.
Yes, I will, guess I should, try to keep things low and easy this year.
Wishing you all a good new week ahead.

    1. Robert,
Oh my goodness, explaining how things boil over to a 5 year old--maybe a bit like explaining where all the white from snow goes? Enough events boiling over all around you in Athens, probably best to keep a quiet calm in your own life. Wishing you well.

  2. I love the changes you made in this photo in regards to what you wrote...very nice...and it matters not what size your bowl is..it is what you choose to fill it with. Thanks so much for visiting today;)

    1. Danielle,
One's bowl can runneth over just as easily as one's cup (and I'm not just talking bras here!)

  3. We had some awfully good chicken soup this evening which you could have filled your bowl up with had you been here.

And you should be here, as then you could get to the Hopper exhibition at the Grand Palais before January 28. Not too late to get a ticket to Paris, eh ?

Can't wait to see what you will be putting in that bowl in the days ahead... I'm sure it will be good. Maybe you could put a little in my bowler hat ?

    1. Owen,
We recently had quite a feed of turkey soup here, after the round of turkey dinners and sandwiches post-Christmas, so maybe I'll skip your kind offer of chicken soup. Unless of course I happen to find a ticket to Paris lurking in the depths of my bowl. Probably not before Jan. 28; guess I won't be hopping over the pond to take in the Hopper show, which makes me a little hopping mad.
What's with the bowler hat? Do you wear it to go bowling?

  4. In 2013 I'm looking for a lttle dough, knead deep in the yeast, not heading too far west, hoping for some time for loafing and sharing a slice or two of life. Stay in touch.

    1. Jann,
OMG, pasta and red sauce--my most favourite bowl filler!!! Maybe with a couple of meatballs thrown in? And some freshly grated Parmesan? Oh, and let's wash it down with a bracing Sicilian red! Cheers to you for more magic under the Sicilian sun throughout 2013!

  6. Very poignant... especially that top photo. I like the image of the empty bowl; no preconceived ideas of what life should be like - but remaining open to whatever unfolds. And I love how the bowl is situated on the couch - as if poised, waiting to be filled - as you said - in a pose of open receptivity... Love is an open bowl :) May your open bowl be filled with LOVE - from wherever it comes... ~ ~ ~

  8. Thanks for the uplifting words. I'm about to get my bread mixing bowl out ... I love making bread, not only because I find it a meditative activity but also because of the pleasure shared when eating it. To-day I'm baking corn bread for a lunch guest.
Could these be chick peas in the last image?

Wishing you a wonderful and creative year!

  10. gorgeous photos and images - unfortunately 2013 has turned into unlucky for some and my bowl has been filled with a fractured ankle - ouch - but am looking for the silver lining!! Happy New Year and Greetings from Nice...

    1. Catherine,
Ouch! is right. Maybe a bit of a challenge to find the silver lining there...although perhaps an enforced slowing down and focusing inward is in order? My own bowl has produced a bout of flu and some other health issues. Could be a challenging year but, as you say, we must focus on finding the silver lining.

  11. i thought i had commented on this wondrous bowl, but it seems that i only came to drink the exquisite tea offering and then i left, shame on me!!! :-)
(but maybe i was indeed so filled with peace and gratitude, that i could only bow to you, silently)...

    1. This bowing and smiling could go on and on, like one of those clichéed scenes from an American movie depicting Japanese visitors bowing in greeting and gratitude to their hosts.
      :-)
