If wishes were lilacs

No sign of flowers here as yet...though spring finally seems to be in the air...

I'm dreaming of lilacs to come...
We have several lilac trees in our yard, but no signs of buds, let alone leaves.
But one of these days they are going to POP!

As well as offering you this humble bouquet, I'm adding it to the Friday (and all weekend long)
Floral Love meme
hosted at Mona's Picturesque blog.
Do stop by and smell the roses there...
and all the other lovely posies on view.

  1. About 29 years ago, when I first moved into the house I'm now preparing to move out of, and where there are lilacs in my back yard each May, my late mother in law mentioned how she had fresh lilacs as the flower at her wedding so many years earlier.

Their anniversary was May 21 and so I started noticing that most years, the lilacs were indeed at their peak by that date. Very early or very late starts to spring rarely resulted in full blossoms happening any more than five days before or after the 21st.

So my prediction is that MY lilacs, at least, will be in full bloom no later than May 26. Buds are going to have to start appearing pretty darn soon though!

    1. What a lovely story, Hilary! Wouldn't lilacs make a divine wedding flower--the scent alone is intoxicating. I am encouraged by your positing of the dates to expect lilac blooms. I am terrible at paying attention to dates and remembering when what happens, other than in general terms, so am very appreciative of this rough guide. And truth to tell--tonight, against a well-lit sky at the end of a brutally windy day--I saw the silhouettes of little tiny lilac leaves on the tree nearest our house! Huzzah! Spring is about to pop.

So are you actually in the throes (and "throws") of moving out of your house? Twenty nine years is a lot to leave behind. I'm looking at walking away from twenty, myself.

    1. It certainly feels like the latest spring ever! Records might say differently...but what do they know? Everyone around here's been grumbling...but hopefully all that is about to change...

  4. I can smell the lilacs in that photo, so vivid are they. Lilacs are the best flower in the world, I think. Dream away!! Their time will come.

    1. Isn't lilac a heady scent?! At some point it becomes almost overwhelming, but we're far from that time as yet. How lovely that you think lilacs are the best flower in the world. They are so sweet and intoxicating, yet humble. And they make the loveliest of bouquets. I feel blessed to have inherited several old lilac trees, both purple and white varieties, with this house. Have rejoiced in them every single spring in the 20 years that we've been here.

  5. Gorgeous! I love lilacs. I saw crocuses today on my walk and the first butterflies. It feels like spring is finally here.

    1. Oh,crocuses are so sweet! I haven't even seen any of those yet...I must go exploring (in other people's yards) now that the snow has finally disappeared. It does feel like spring is on its way in here, if not fully landed. Thanks for coming by to smell the lilacs!

  6. I have been watching the row of lilacs from my kitchen window.. and finally I see swelling of their buds. Hope they don't drop off from the cold.

    1. I just just just saw that same thing tonight after supper!!! It must be a result of the weirdly warm weather we had yesterday. Actual sunshine and temperature hovering around 20C?! But some minus temps coming up in the overnights...so, yeah, fingers definitely crossed about the buds bursting into bloom. It was insanely windy here today. I think if we put up a windmill in our yard we could power the whole village.

  7. i adore lilac - one of my favourite flowers... but even here, in this warmer climate, we say that may is the lilac month :-) (still, they are almost open now, all the blossoms grapes already formed, just waiting to unfold in the next days)...
(the lilac you saw on the Bridge, with my little girl, is actually from last year :-)

    1. Ah, okay. May is the magic month of lilac. No need for me to panic or feel disgruntled then...at least, not about the lack of lilacs thus far. It's lovely to think of them blossoming in so many parts of the planet, wafting their perfume and announcing that spring is well and truly in the air. So,not much longer now...we are always a little behind the trends here in the maritimes. You must get a new photo of your little girl with the lilacs this year to bear witness to the changes a year can bring. What new thing might you discover about her there in that moment? But no, there is no such thing as "must do" when it comes to wonder and beauty and capturing a moment. It is pure inspiration. Breathe in...pause...enjoy...

  8. When I was in Elementary school, eons ago, the May Day Celebration complete with May Queen, Maypole dancing, racing, was always the highlight of the year. The May Queen and her entourage would take their places in front of a screen completely covered with Lilac blooms. Whenever I see or smell Lilacs, this memory comes back to me and makes me smile.

    1. Oh, such a treat to see that you've managed to find your way back here and that the Google Ogre has finally unlocked the door to you!
What a lovely memory you've shared about the Maypole dancing and the May Queen. It must have been a visual and olfactory delight to behold that lilac-covered screen as well. I remember seeing girls doing the Maypole Dance on tv, in black and white, at Nana Vera's and was really looking forward to getting the chance to do so (in colour) when I got to school. Alas, the tradition had been abandoned by the time I hit Grade 1.
It's great to see you smile!

    1. Thank you! Lilacs seem to be the language of love the world over, rather than roses! A more humble offering, at any rate.
