Blizzard Warning in Effect

We interrupt our regular programming tonight as there is a

Blizzard Warning in Effect!

This is what it says on Environment Canada's website tonight for our region:

Warnings

Heavy snowfall, strong winds and blowing snow will give blizzard conditions overnight and on Saturday.

This is a warning that blizzard conditions with near-zero visibilities are expected in these regions. Monitor weather conditions..listen for updated statements.

This system will give heavy snow, very strong northeast winds gusting up to 80 km/h, and blowing snow to regions along the Fundy coast. Blizzard conditions are forecast to begin near midnight in the west and spread east by Saturday morning where they will continue most of the day. Total snowfall amounts of up to 40 centimetres are expected in these regions by Saturday evening.

Nothing for it but to batten down the hatches and wait for it to blow in and blow itself out.  Fingers crossed that the electricity will hold!  I posted these snowy scenes to get us acclimatized for the big white-out.

Hopefully see you on the other side of the storm!

  1. We have been tracking the storm today as well (from Colorado), as my brother lives in New England, so they are hunkering down as well. Stay safe! Beautiful photos!

    1. MM,
Looks like the states got it rather worse than us,and we got it pretty bad. I've seen worse. Certainly didn't see many cars on the road so I guess everyone got the memo. I hope your brother weathered the storm safely.

    1. Jann,
Safe and sound in this old former farmhouse. I'm pretty sure it's weathered worse storms than we've been seeing today. How could I have neglected to get in those essential supplies when I knew this storm was coming! Will have to make do with Scotch.

    1. Lynn,
Faring quite well, though we did have a power outage for several hours, right around supper time. A kind neighbour braved the snow drifts and mean wind and brought us an old campstove of his so that we could heat up something for supper. Wasn't looking forward to eating salad in this cold!

It is scenic. Best viewed through windows until it stops blowing, though.

The world has been pretty much black and white, mostly white, all day today! Only colour is of the snowploughs passing by.

  6. The storm has gone through here for the past couple of days leaving tons of snow, but this morning the sun is shining and the shovels are out. I guess the storm has reached your house by now, maybe you can sit next to the fire and relax while it plays through,,,M

    1. Michael,
I've just been viewing shots on tv of Toronto and area digging out today from the storm you got hammered with yesterday. Everybody seems so nattily dressed as they shovel! It's been blowing here since last night and is still going strong late tonight. Can't tell how much snow has actually fallen due to the high winds and drifts. I've been sitting in the warmest room of the house all day--the woodstove is in the basement so the heat comes up through a big vent in the living room floor. I think a storm is the perfect excuse to do nothing but relax as it "plays through" (sorry, but I used up all my golf repartee with my "teed off" remark last post!) :-)

  7. Interesting images,i like the way the snowflakes show up in the second.
This forecast sounds serious, however I imagine folks in Albert County plan for such weather. Do you have log fires?

    Stay warm and safe!

    1. Ruby,
Smarter folks plan for such weather but it seems we're not that bright. After 20 years of living in the area, we still haven't bought emergency supplies like a campstove, kerosene or LED lamp, or even a good supply of candles! To make matters worse, I neglected to buy a bottle of wine yesterday. A lot of homes, including ours, have woodstoves as back-up heat at least. Before we got ours, it got mighty cold during a power outages as we have electric heat. Thankfully, the fire was kept going all through the storm today so we felt pretty cozy.

  8. A very gusty snow-whiped day, for sure. Your photo is more to my liking.

Gusty is right! Feel like we're living in a snowglobe! Guess we've got the calm after the storm to look forward to. Yeah, I know, I'm clutching at straws...or snowflakes...

    1. Hilary,
That's a whole lot of snow to fall all at once! It's hard to tell how much snow we got, and are still getting at 10:30 pm, due to the mad winds. There are big drifts and bare patches. Scenes on the telly of Moncton make it look like a whole lot got dumped, though. Not as big a storm as I've seen here in the past, but it certainly is a long-lasting one. Not many people were going anywhere in the region today, that's for sure. I don't think the snow is sticking to trees and branches due to the high winds so probably won't be much photo fodder.

    2. Yes, it was clear and sunny here today but not overly photogenic for the lack of stickage (I can too so make words up!).

Re your comment on my blog: I don't remember that BG song. The only one I recall aside from the classic eye-rolling tearjerker Honey, was one sugar-laden tune called "Watching Scotty Grow." Remember that one? ;)

    3. Hilary,
Still blowing here this afternoon, a day and a half after the storm started! Three foot drifts behind the back door. I don't care how scenic it might be outside--I'm staying indoors! Besides, the branches are all bare and it's difficult to convey the size of snow drifts in a photo.

You're lucky not to remember the song I mentioned, but I feel your pain at being able to recall "Honey"--truly a gag-reflex-inducing song if ever there was one! Happy to say that I don't recall "Watching Scotty Grow"; the name title alone gives me the heaves.

    1. Elizabeth,
Yes, indeed, we got a true and proper blizzard that is still blowing this afternoon. I don't think any more snow is falling but it's impossible to say due to the blowing about of what's already accumulated. The roads are still a mess. That's okay--nowhere to go,nothing to do. Might as well process some more snow scenes on my computer to keep you happy!
      :-)
