Sight Seeing

Hey, while I wasn't looking, this post got an award!   Thanks Hilary.

While strolling the streets of Montreal a couple of weeks ago, I came upon a few unusual sights.

It's always good to have a designated parking space for one's piano while one is out sightseeing.

Big Bird does heavy metal--on roller skates!

A different take on mirror balls?
Or is it R2D2?
Or maybe one of those "living statues" that move when you toss money at them???

Late afternoon with Letterman.

  1. I love your clever captions.. and your eye for the absurd. Thanks for the morning laugh.

As for piano parking.. at least you know you'll never lose your keys. ;)

  2. Was the capture of blue in the area of the throat (chakra) of Reflector intentional?

WV ulacti - Latin for are you nursing?

  3. Took shots of those same statues at the Musee de Beaux Arts - your are better - especially with your creative captions.

    Delightful post!

  4. piano parking, this made me so laugh :-)

the bird is my favourite one, especially with that egg coming out, i think it is a huge egg?

  5. Hilary,
Now it's my turn to thank you for the morning laugh!

  6. DCW,
I didn't even notice the blue in the throat area! Signs, portents, and meaning everywhere if we only know how to look.

I believe the ancient Romans used "Ulacti?" in their "Got Milk?" ad campaigns for dairy products, back in the day.

  7. Bonnie,
Thanks for reminding me where I found those sculptures. I was in a hot and humid mental and physical fog from wandering all day. By this point I was clutching at any opportunity to stop in the shade for a few moments before climbing up the path to Mt.Royal to walk the tree lined road home (well, to my daughter's place; not home to New Brunswick!)

  8. Roxana,
That parking sign stopped me in my tracks!

It does, indeed, appear to be an egg issuing from the bird's nether area. That's gotta hurt!

  9. I love Letterman best... public sculpture is one of my faves to photograph and it looks like Montreal has a wealth of suitable subjects - Greetings from final days in Mexico....

  10. Tee hee. Letterman. You should send that to him and maybe he'd invite you onto his show? What I love, too, about R2D2 and Big Bird are the cool reflections in the windows.

  11. Catherine,
You've presented such a wealth of beautiful statuary, street art, and gallery art from Mexico! I'm looking forward to your reports and sightings from France. These days must be bitter sweet for you.

  12. jann,
So pleased you noticed the window reflections as I was quite intent on including them in the shots. I think I'll just stick to my local obscurity rather than aiming for the Letterman show, but thanks for the suggestion!

Thank you for this escape into art. Please have a good weekend you all.

  15. Definetly like that Letterman! Your afternoon strolls are a tonic to me down here (where liquefaction rules supreme and it's no good for sculpting!)

  16. The bird seems to be giving birth to a bowling ball, no wonder she's looking a bit frazzled...

If only they had suspended the mirror man to make him spin, with a spotlight on him... memories of disco days. Maybe we are all breaking up into mere reflections of our former selves?

Now if you'll excuse me, I need to go park my piano, I never knew where to leave that baby (grand) before now...

  17. m,
    First there was park'n'ride, now there's park'n'play!

  18. Robert,
I was so intent on getting the photo that I didn't, until just now, think about the actual making of the "Letterman" sculpture! Thanks for pointing that out to me.

  19. Saj,
So happy to have you along on these strolls. I think from now on in your life you'll be happy if the earth doesn't move for you--no matter what the position...er...situtation!

  20. Owen,
I think giving birth generally feels as if one is issuing a bowling ball into the world through a golf ball sized entryway.

So, do you still have your platform shoes for dancing beneath the disco ball? I was just thinking tonight as I looked in the mirror how I am starting to not recognize my reflection.

If you leave your baby grand with the parking valet, be sure to leave him your key (of G).

  21. Love those blue and sepia toned reflections on the Mirror Man and the Letter Man is amazing! The empty spaces are almost more "there" then the solid parts. It's always so interesting the choices made for art in public spaces! And the different takes each of us have. I thought the bird looked kind of militaristic. Good eye on the Piano Parking, that's hilarious!

  22. Stickup,
It's so much fun running around taking snapshots in Montreal. It's a wealth of fascinating sights. I only wish I was courageous enough to get pix of some of the colourful people strolling the streets.

  23. Well, I don't know where the beige suede leather platform shoes went, probably the same garage sale as the shiny silk shirts... holy cow, hadn't thought of those in ages, it was a phase which didn't last long... gosh, what a lot of drivel we were force fed way back when...

Well, I've been trying to read a message in the man of letters, but can't make any sense of it... do you think he was written in some sort of secret code ???

    ReplyDelete
  24. Owen,
I kinda wish I still had my platform boots, cork-soled blue suede platform sandals, and lime green leather high-heeled platform shoes! They're back in style now...but I doubt I'd be willing to risk breaking my hip (as the elderly tend to do)walking in them.

I think it would be more of a worry if you could actually read a message in Dyslexic Man, Owen!

Love these pics! Especially Letterman and Big Bird! I am not sure which I prefer more - the art work or the commentary. It is a tough call for me.

Please, please, please share more photos with us. And commentary! Both are very much appreciated.

  26. Audrey,
Well, okay, you've twisted my arm: I'll just have to cough up a few more pix of Montreal before getting back to my Vancouver cache. Thanks for the encouragement!

  31. You definitely deserved the Post of the Week with this one, Lynne! That Piano Parking was too much! Do you think it's just Latin for "Park quietly"? (piano = soft)
The turkey is laying an egg (skating back to her nest in a hurry)! Very creative!
The glitter man is definitely a man, I would say. And Letterman would be pleased with his logo!
    xo
