Baubles, Bangles, and Edna

This is a photo compositon I made of an older woman I saw creeping along a street in Little Italy in NYC. She was being encouraged by her younger companion to, "Hurry up, Edna!" I loved that she still colours her hair, applies make-up, dons the glam shades and pumps up the volume with big clip-on earings and ropes of faux pearls. Edna is still strutting her stuff, even if it is at a snail's pace. I combined the picture of Edna with one of a storefront window that had caught my eye in another New York neighbourhood

.

Even though neither image is technically good, I find that the haziness (some of it deliberate: it's called "noise") lends an appropriate mood to the composition. At any rate, that's my excuse and I'm sticking to it.

Here's the original Edna photo, surreptitiously snapped as she shuffled by the streetside table where C & I were indulging in vodka-sauced pizza and beers.

Shades of the young Edna?

  1. Good Morning Lynne!

Funny how the subconscious works, and wonderful how we can now bring to fruition our internal juxtapositions... love what you've done with the photos, and the story you've surmised... so much satisfaction in this simple post.
It's a good excuse you're sticking to... I actually add noise to photos when appropriate.
Thanks for the simple delight, Lynne!

  2. I like it with no necessity for excuse. Life is so often a collage and some of the good stuff seems to appear from of random, out-of-context circumstances. Often we can't capture everything in full fidelity but we can smile appreciatively as it passes. Your composition has that quality.

    Hi MadLynne!
I love the photo! I think it looks really cool together, and I wouldn't have known it was two images melded together unless you said so! Wonderful!
Oh, I want to be like Edna too when I'm her age, all baubled up!
    :)

  4. Blog Friends:

Thanks for your comments. It pleases me that what I wanted to convey was so well received, perceptive lot that you are!

    ALERT:
I would linger here longer but have badly sprained my ankle today and am in agony, hobbling about on crutches (or on my ass), all on my own...and must go elevate the offending...oops! codeine must have kicked in--can't think of the word. Right now I just wish I was as nimble as Edna.

  6. I twisted my ankle walking home at lunch in my circus shoes. Thought it was okay, so walked back after lunch. Big mistake. Thanks, Rain, for your well-wishing. Codeine + a little red wine has helped. ;-}

LOL Codeine and red wine? Yeah, I can see how that helps!!! Sounds like my Neo Citran with a splash of vodka cure for the flu!!!
