Oh, Go to Halifax!

Since I got back from a fun time in Halifax with good friends, things have been a bit up in the air with me.

For one thing, I've been hunting high and low for my shoes.

Oh, and speaking of shoes, there's a very popular pub in Halifax called the Economy Shoe Shop.  It was once a real shoe store but now caters to the thirsty and hungry (well, yes, I do realize that one could hunger and thirst for a certain pair of shoes, but one would have to go elsewhere).

Just as with shoes, there are all sorts of beers to choose from in Halifax.
With 60 varieties of brewskies on tap in this pub, one could certainly end up tap dancing around the locked door of the occupied washroom!

But a visit to Halifax is not just about beer (and shoes)...one is also encouraged to "eat like you're family"!
Clearly, this woman has brought a very large bag lunch with her, perhaps having interpreted the sign to mean "eat like you're a family"including all the aunts, uncles, cousins, and pets.

Yes indeed, the good folk of Halifax really do their best to butter up visitors
and tempt them to stay just a bit longer than planned.
Good thing Halifax is such an interesting city to walk around,
what with all those calories to burn off.

***

I still have plenty more Halifax pix on tap but am packing up for another trip,
heading off to la belle province (Quebec)
for a couple of weeks.
Am taking my laptop with me so will try to keep in touch...
but no promises because promises are like pie crusts--
easily made (easily bought, in some cases) and easily broken

xo

  1. What fun to be found up there in Halifax! :-)
Like your shoe store turned bar, we have a chocolate shop that was once a button shop, for over a hundred years.

    1. Yes, Halifax is really a lively and colourful city. Lots of interesting old houses that have been refurbished and an excellent cultural scene. I love it when old houses are made use of, either as new homes or boutiques, restaurants, galleries, etc. So many North American cities just tear the old dears down. I love the sound of that chocolate shop! Do they make any chocolates in the shape of buttons??

  2. I see that Halifax tickled your fancy :) A party girl at heart - eh? I have roots in Nova Scotia :) Yes, I'm part Canadian. One side from Shubenacadie (outside of Halifax) and the other from Digby on the west coast. Got to Halifax back in 91/92 to try to trace my roots. Loved it. Only got to two pubs, one called the Granite Brewery on Barrington St., and the other called Thackery's - which was more of an eatery - good food, and a good time! lol

btw - I thought your last photo sad "EAT BUTTE" :) Don't need no stinkin' beer, I can't see straight anyway! LOL

Have fun in Quebec Travel Girl! :)

    1. Actually, not a party girl at all. Unless it's a party of colours, a riot of colours, a festival of colours. Then it tickles my fancy. I'm more interested in the pub fare and sitting outside on the terrasse on a sunny day than knocking back beers. :)

Shubenacadie...I love that name. We roll past it on our way to and from Halifax and it's a lovely area. We went to Digby once...did a whale-sighting tour and ate some of the famous Digby scallops.

  4. I'm sure you'll be successful with Pie Crust in QB-Land when you put your Magic Hands into it. It will probably turn into some kind of jigsaw puzzle but your magic will, no doubt, make you successfully create you own. Take it from the Dough Master: add a little herb in the mix and do your rendition of God Save the Queen. That will increase the Value of dough in QB-Land!

    1. My general modus operandi, yes, making a cohesive whole (dough) out of something that seems like it shouldn't stick together yet somehow, with a little imagination and persistence, magically does. May do a rendition of Oh Canada this time around to change things up a bit.

  5. Well, after sampling the 60 varieties of brew there, and then finding the washroom locked up tight, at least there is a good big storm drain in the street outside... has no doubt save more than one sailor !
Anon-y-mouse... ok... from France... does that help clarify the author's identity ?

  7. I've always had a hankering to see Halifax as we had a very old neighbour who lived there when young. He had a souvenir from the Titanic, and I guess his memories were probably 50 years out of date, too. But when someone loves a place it sticks in your mind. I look forward to seeing more of your photos.

    1. Lots to see and do in Halifax. I still have photos to share from 2 or 3 previous trips there. However, as I've now moved on to Ottawa on my journeys...not too sure just when we'll return to Halifax here. Never a dull moment! (at least I hope you find that's so)

  8. Yes I misread that sign initially - glad you had a good time in Halifax - I was there the summer of 1990 and caught the Buskers Festival which was great fun - does that still happen?

    1. Yes, the Busker Festival is alive and well in Halifax. Along with all sorts of other fun events throughout the summer. I experienced the buskers once several years ago and was so delighted with the variety of talent on offer all over the city.

    1. Oh, that's not good...will have to forego the shoes and get you a good solid pair of deerhide, fur-lined mukluks to keep those tootsies warm.

  10. We went Down East a few years ago, visiting in Yarmouth. We only managed to walk the pier in Halifax before having to head home. Your photos make me realize that we missed a lot.

    1. I'm very fortunate to have some good friends in Halifax so I've gotten to explore some of the city I might not have seen on my own. But even just wandering as a tourist, there is plenty to discover as the city is not overwhelmingly big. It's changing, though...as cities do. I've never been to Yarmouth, myself.

  12. I love Halifax but it's been decades since I was there. Your clever post title made me think of something we used to say when visiting Ottawa and crossing the border into La Belle Province and back into Ontario... "We've been to Hull and back."

    1. Ha ha, as have I. A most enjoyable walk, crossing that bridge (over the River Styx). In fact, have a new batch of Ottawa pix still in my camera... Coming to this blog... one of these days...

  13. Lynne, we used to frequent that very Shoe Shop when we were in town for ACTS (Atlantic Craft Trade Show) . and stayed at a wonderful old antique filled place on Barrington called The Waverley Inn. Always had a good time there.. there is also a great alternative renovators resource shop there too or there was then. got some cool old architectural finds there.

    1. Isn't Halifax a fun city?! I enjoyed lunch at the Shoe Shop but haven't experienced its nightly entertainment. I am blessed to have good friends in Hfx now (you remember the folks from Cornucopia, I'm sure). You should look them up next time you're in their town.
