Good Glacious!

I promised you glaciers.

Here is the first glacial glimpse.

And here is a closer look.

The ice marches relentlessly over the still mountains,

creating wonders in form, line and colour.

The ice crystals form their own fearsome sculptures.

But this is just the tip of the iceberg, so to speak.
We viewed two ice fields on the Alaskan cruise into Glacier Bay.  I don't want to overwhelm you so I'll save further views for my next post.

Meanwhile, breathe deeply and listen to the silence.
(And pass your hip flask, please.)

    1. Mystic,
The blue ice was certainly dazzling. It made me understand why people are moved to buy big ticket "rocks" in the form of jewellery as they are the only thing that come close to capturing the dazzle and colour of these ice forms.

    1. Merisi,
I was hoping/wondering the same thing, what with the fast-paced climate change happening the world over. The guide, however, informed us that these are relatively new glaciers and are still being formed, even as we watched. Encouraging!

    1. DCW,
I'm sure up close there would be all sorts of eerie noises, if one could hear them over the chattering of one's teeth.

  4. So Calm... almost reverent...I'm sure after the oohs and ahhhs there must have been a certain silence everyone felt.

    1. Gwen,
There was certainly an almost palpable feeling of awe and reverence amongst the passengers viewing the spectacular sight. Other than a gaggle of young Asian women, shod in flip flops, toting impressive cameras, and chattering away very animatedly. I quickly found a less crowded deck and enjoyed the view in blissful silence.

  6. This scenery is so,so beautiful and the sculpted ice amazing. And of course your photos are splendid!
I suppose the expanse of it all must be almost impossible to capture on film.

    1. Ruby,
You're so right about the expanse being difficult to capture on film. I saw some envy-inducing camera lenses out there, though, and perhaps a video pan would have given a little clearer idea of the breadth of the scene. However, even standing there on board the ship, it was difficult to gauge the scale of the glaciers in relation to the size of the mountains, which were pretty darn big in their own right.

  7. That first shot perfectly "personifies" SILENCE. So lovely.

You promised us glaciers, louciao and boy did you deliver some beauties. I assume they're melting? In a few years as we're sweating through winter, your glacier photos will sadly look "quaint."

    1. Jann,
The park interpreter did say that these are quite new formations (relative term in the context of glacier time)and that they're still being created. She pointed out the clouds on top of the mountains, where it would be snowing and adding more crystals to the ice below. I felt somewhat encouraged by this, that somewhere at least, the ice is still forming rather than melting.

  8. Guess would have tried to capture some of that air inside plastic bags. What joy it must have been. Thank you for these wonderful impressions. Please have a good new week.

    1. Robert,
Yes, wonderful bracing fresh clear air. You might have had trouble explaining the air filled bags to the customs officials when you got home, though. I'm sure they would try to tax it! Fortunately, they weren't selling any in aerosol cans in the ship boutique. I'm glad you're enjoying my impressions of the scene. I hope the week is treating you well, too.

  9. Oh beautiful sights there, there is something about ice don't you reckon? Fascinating stuff - it is all so silent and mysterious. And keeps one's drinks chilled at the same time. Brilliant!

    1. Saj,
Ice is fascinating, yes, as long as one is not walking on it. I have a real phobia about that, which is very unfortunate considering where I live. Silent and mysterious in glacier formation, though, yes; being formed according to its own rules and inclination. So much more fascinating than anything a mere mortal artist could dream up. The colours were astounding. They do keep more than just one's drinks chilled. There is a vodka made from ice bergs.
