I visited Finn Slough again several weeks back and was thrilled by the amazing light that flooded the place for a few brief, glorious moments.
The sky was dark and ominous and yet the sun was illuminating everything. This photo is completely unaltered. I took a few more pictures that day and will share them with you by and by, but these are my last couple of days in Vancouver and I'm a bit preoccupied with this and that. You know how it is. Packing and farewells and such. sigh.
Oh what the heck--here's one more
Back soon!
P.S. While I was in transit from Canada's west coast to my home in the east, Hilary of The Smitten Image kindly bestowed an award on this post for Phine Photography! Thanks, Hilary.

Stunning stunning stunning. This is when you know they're right when they say photography is all about light. You really captured it!
ReplyDeletethat light is indeed stunning - the ominous backdrop contrasted with the highly lit subjects - love the dramatic shots created as a result - Greetings from the Riviera...
ReplyDeleteThe colours are lovely.Looks like you've had a productive time in Vancouver.
ReplyDeleteSafe journey!
Ruby
Finn Slough has been the source of some of your most moving photos, and has made it a place to see with my own eyes. Thank you for "discovering" it for me.
ReplyDeleteSafe travels to you and an easy move. I look forward to your next adventures.
Bises,
Genie
Finn Slough usually looks like a tornado just blew through.
ReplyDeleteStunning indeed! The photos actually remind me more of Fall than early Spring. Those ominous clouds look like snow clouds. Love them!
ReplyDeleteSafe Journey! Christine
And adventure for the sense of sight and thought.
ReplyDeleteGuess, would love to spend a very long time there.
Thank you for the journey, and if only in mind. Please have a good new week ahead.
That light is wonderful!
ReplyDeleteYou got there at just the right time.. that beautiful magical light sure blessed your images. Fantastic. Have a safe trip back. :)
ReplyDeleteSuperb light. Absolutely stunning.
ReplyDeleteLove the photos....so beautiful!!!
ReplyDeleteCongrats for the Post of the Week award,
Hugs
SueAnn
What amazing golden light. I love to see it against a grey sky. It always looks so yellow and contrasty. Sometimes it makes me feel almost as if I am on stage!
ReplyDeleteWhere are you going, from Vancouver?
that is lovely! congrats on your POTW!
ReplyDeletethese are really gorgeous!!! i so love the muted tones, they look like autumn to me...
ReplyDeletePerfect, perfect light.
ReplyDeletegood job.
Congrats on POTW.
Van Gogh would have loved Finn. It's warm and sunny on the East Coast. Hurry back before it changes its mood.
ReplyDeleteBeautiful captures, spectacular light.
ReplyDeletejann,
ReplyDeleteRight time, right place, right light, camera at the ready. Pure good luck.
Catherine,
ReplyDeleteFor once a light to "rival" that of the Riviera? Well, at least give it a run for its money.
Forest Dream Weaver,
ReplyDeleteYou're right, in terms of photographing, I did have a productive time in Vancouver. Have barely scratched the surface of what's stockpiled.
Genie,
ReplyDeleteFinn Slough is a remarkable site/sight in its oddity. I think it would be impossible to make a bad photo of the place, but with that gorgeous dark sky as a backdrop on that particular day, I could certainly do no wrong with my little camera. If I didn't have a friend living there I would never have discovered the place. I'm happy to be able to share my finding.
Wayne,
ReplyDeleteEither a tornado or a storm surge. My friend tells me they usually get 2 surges a year, with the water flooding the deck in front of the house and lapping at the door.
Mystic Meandering,
ReplyDeleteIt was certainly an odd spring in the Vancouver area this year, with a few surprise snowfalls, but thankfully not on the day I went to Finn Slough. Although, it must be quite a sight when it's all frosted over. Technically, it was still winter, though pussy willows were popping.
Robert,
ReplyDeleteI'm glad you enjoyed this return visit to the Slough. It seems it would be a most excellent place to sit and ponder, read, paint, cook, wander. A real refuge of sorts.
Lady Fi,
ReplyDeleteYes, wasn't it an amazing light? Ominous and promising at the same time.
Hilary,
ReplyDeleteTiming is everything, but it was really just pure chance that beamed me into the spotlight in Finn Slough at that precise moment, giving me just enough time to grab a few pictures before the sky settled back into its usual quietude.
Thanks so much for the POTW!
Adrian,
ReplyDeleteAbsolutely--the light was stunning. I was in awe. Thanks for your visit.
SueAnn,
ReplyDeleteThanks for your kind comment. I think it would have been hard to not get a decent picture of such a place under such light, but I will gratefully accept the praise.
Jenny Woolf,
ReplyDeleteIsn't such light wonderfully dramatic?! Like being on a stage set, certainly. One almost expects a voice to come booming out of the sky with a prophetic announcement.
I have now travelled back to my home on the east coast of Canada, in New Brunswick, from my "home and native land" in Vancouver on the west coast, where I was born and raised. Wintered west this year, staying with my mum.
TexWis Girl,
ReplyDeleteThank you! I'm glad you see the beauty of the place. It's rather special, and the light that day was amazing.
Roxana,
ReplyDeleteThe muted tones of rust and decay and ominous grey skies do speak of autumnal sleep, don't they. It's as if everything is frozen in time at the Slough. I should love to see it when everything is in full bloom, although with the salt tide I don't think it's ever really green and vibrant out there. But always interesting and entrancing, I think.
Hilary,
ReplyDeleteI can't take credit for the light, but at least I was ready willing and able to capture some of it digitally. Thanks for your visit and nice comment.
DCW,
ReplyDeleteNow there's an intriguing thought: Van Gogh let loose on the Slough! Imagine the swirls and twirls! The yellows!
I travelled back to the east in time to experience this crazy summer preview! It actually snowed in N.Van the day before I left. I think there has been a continental drift in the weather.
Gillian Olson,
ReplyDeleteThank you so much for visiting and leaving such a kind comment. It's lovely that you took the time to come over here from the Smitten Image.
Magic! Pure magic, it looks like someone has (rightfully) put a huge spotlight on the place. xx
ReplyDeleteSaj,
ReplyDeleteHa, yes, a huge spotlight! Well put. One almost expected a big baritone voice to come booming out of the sky with it. The effect lasted just long enough for me to get a few pix, then the sun went behind the clouds and we had to retreat indoors and drink wine.
:-)
