Beside the Sea

Just a few short weeks ago...

Is it just me, or does it feel like summer's coming to a close?

  1. The seasons change, but memories linger like the fluffiest of white clouds on a slight summer breeze.

    Nice images.

  2. Well there does seem a shift in the air but as far as my son is concerned after the last day of his summer job, yesterday, says "Ahhh, finally the start of Summer Holidays!!!"... of course that will only last till school starts

    Love the boats photo!!

  4. love them all, but that boat photo - just magical!

I couldn't comment on the summer drawing to a close, it feels more like autumn to me, coming from a very hot and humid place... but a lovely autumn, fresh and crisp air :)

  8. Gwen,
An Acadian friend remarked to me several years ago that there is a noticeable change in the climate after Aug.15 in these parts, and I've noticed that it's so ever since. I rather like this "B" side of summer.

  9. DCW,
Not quite ready for the warm and fuzzies, though I am enjoying my quilt again these nights.

  10. Manuela,
Oh yes, of course, everything's relative, isn't it. Must be quite a shock to your system being back in TO, even though it's home. I remember flying back there after spending 3 months in sunny Spain, arriving to grey dirty vestiges of snow in early April. At least it's still Canadian summer to help you ease your way back in.

  11. Melanie!
It's so great to have you visit. I'll be over to your blog place for a good long look around and will post your link on my studio blog. I'm a bit addicted to the blogging thang, I must admit...though it waxes and wanes. I hear you're taking courses at my old alma mater and have a sweet place out Steveston way. We MUST get together next time I'm out west...probably this winter. Yes??
    Love,

  12. Robert,
Thank you so much! I did have a wonderful time taking the pictures and lots of fun playing with them to tweak the tones, all in an effort to convey my feelings. Lovely that you caught on.

  13. yes, i feel the same. i don't know about you, but this is the time of the year i love most, early autumn... torn between melancholy and longing.
though in your pictures the freshness of the sea and the bright blue are a very intense 'summer feeling' to me :-)

  14. Roxana,
I am having to eat my words as summer has suddenly come rushing back here! I mostly notice a shift in the atmosphere at night...the air is crisp, hinting at fall. Apples are flinging themselves from the trees these days, always a sure sign of autumn's approach. A ritual sacrifice on the part of the trees? Yes, it's still lushly summerish, but there's that subtle sense of imminent death in all this abundance as well. I do love autumn, yes. My favourite season. Maybe I am rushing towards it just a little too quickly. I will savour the blues of sky and sea a little longer...though I doubt we will return to the shore this year.

"Torn between melancholy and longing": A lovely description of autumn time. I think they are emotions you are very familiar with?

  15. Well, it's like this, Sis. Our season is changing down here, so YOURS will be changing up thar! Don't worry tho' cos you can have summery visits to NZ while I have wintery visits up thar...and I will always have a drink to match.
I love that photo of the bridge...looks like its inviting us to somewhere other than here.

  16. There you are, out galivanting around the beaches again, capering gleefully with sister Saj, in between seasons it seems, waxing nostalgic... maybe we should head for the equator, where days are 12 hours long all year round, and ocean water is over 25°C, which is not the case where we were this summer, I didn't even go in except to kayak it was so cold... some summer... So, what's Saj got in her cooler ???

  17. the summer is ending indeed and has ended - a sad time as it always means having to curb the excesses of my travels to return once more to school and earn some dosh - love that final shot of the clouds and pathway....

  18. Saj,
I forgot that everything in the world operates in relation to New Zealand. The "bridge to somewhere other than here" sounds to me like a wonderful one to cross just before winter sets in in these parts-- Although your libations also provide pretty fine bridges to alternate realities.

  19. Owen,
I'm sorry you had such a lack of summer heat. Last year summer pretty much didn't show up here, so I know how disappointing that is. I began to wax nostalgic for the passing of the season a little too soon as the heat has come back with a vengeance...not that I'm complaining!

Oh look, Saj is setting up the moveable bar, tiki hut and bamboo stools on the beach now...I hope she has a few drinks that involve little paper umbrellas sticking out of them.
Here's to the old arthritic drooling dog days of summer!

Could I have little more ice in my drink, please. Summer's back!

  21. Catherine,
I'd say you certainly indulged in your wandering excesses this summer! I still remember that dread of having to return to school (as a student, not teacher) at the end of summer, though a bit glad of some routine and order, I guess--and new school clothes. But at least you know the dosh you earn will pay for the fuel of your gypsy ways next year. And some new school clothes.
