Speaking of Emily

Well who should I run into on my travels today but Emily Carr with a few of her friends.

I was out visiting the galleries along Vancouver's Granville Street, and it looks as though Emily was out doing some sketching.

Emily doesn't go anywhere without her pet monkey.

Oddly enough, an exact replica of this statue is to be found on Montreal's Sherbrooke Street, in another gallery area. I'm always surprised and delighted when I run into it there as well. (Forgetfulness does have some advantages!)

The sculpture is by Canadian artist, Joe Fafard, who hails from the Prairies. I wonder if there's another Emily sculpture in Winnipeg.

  1. Wow, I love it! That horse especially is amazing! In my home town of Cottonwood, California, they have put a parade of two-dimensional rustic metal horses, cows, lariat riders, etc. to represent an old-fashioned cattle drive going down the center of Main Street. A nice send-up to pioneer times, but that three-dimensional horse would be so much better! Emily looks cool, too, but I can't see a monkey on a cattle drive! Cool find, Lynne! xxox

  2. I would love to see that rusty old parade, I mean "rustic", excuse me, in Cottonwood! Sounds like great fun. Joe Fafard has also done some 2-dimensional sculptures of cows. I'm glad he did Emily and friends in 3-D, although I think he flattered her a bit by making her thinner than she was. Maybe it had to do with the cost of materials and shipping!
